How to Become a Dance Influencer

With the rise of TikTok and Instagram reels, dance influencers have become the center of attention. Interestingly enough, the most popular dances aren’t the most technically challenging. Quite often, TikTok or Instagram dancers aren’t even professionals. Still, they are becoming more and more influential. In this article, we discuss how to become a dance influencer and what it takes to achieve success on TikTok or Instagram.
Allow your content to be shared
If you are just starting out as a dance influencer, it may be challenging to gain a following. One of the easiest ways to make your account more successful is to make use of the dance community. In TikTok and Instagram, there are plenty of ‘feature accounts’, which usually have a large audience. Their content is based on other dancers’ photos and videos.
Getting your content reposted can attract attention to your account. Sometimes these accounts come across photos and videos they like on their own, but, most often, dancers tag them in their posts.
Make use of branded hashtags
Regardless of whether you prefer Instagram or TikToks, using hashtags is a ‘must’. This way, your content will be more visible, and it will be easier to gain a following.
A great idea is to create hashtag challenges. If TikTok had been popular already in 2015, we would have seen lots of content tagged with #IceBucketChallenge. This strategy is used by many big companies and influencers. For example, Chipotle launched a #GuacDance challenge, which became viral and attracted new customers. Remember that even the best choreography won’t help unless you use the right hashtags.
Create easy and fun choreography
What makes TikTok so fun is the fact anyone can join in – whether they have dance skills or not. When creating dance TikToks, it is important to ensure they are fairly easy and don’t require too much learning.
As an influencer, your goal is to attract a bigger audience. While you can get popular creating content for a niche audience (professional dancers), it most likely won’t go viral.
Use trending sounds or songs
If you have used TikTok before, you already know that the platform favors videos that engage with sounds that are already well-performing. So whether you are creating your own choreography or dancing your worries away to the creation of others, make sure to add a sound or a song that is trending.
Remember – TikTok is not Instagram!
Navigating through many different social media platforms can be challenging. It is easy to get mixed up in all the strategies. However, it is crucial to separate each platform. TikTok is completely different from Instagram, although they share some similar functions.
On Instagram, people are more willing to watch longer-form media, and the content tends to be more professional. TikTok users, however, prefer fast, fun, eye-catching dances. Ideally, your post shouldn’t be longer than 15 seconds.
Get inspired by others
Nowadays, you can become a dance influencer even if you haven’t pursued the activity before. So how can your start? The best way to improve your skills is to get inspired by other dancers (and support them along the way). There is no need to reinvent the wheel. You can join in the fun without spending hours contemplating the most innovative idea for your video.
Simply hit the search bar and admire what dancers are up to. Click the heart button. Comment, even follow. This way, dance videos will appear in your feed more often, plus you will have ideas to try out!
One of the biggest mistakes you can make, especially on TikTok, is to take yourself too seriously. TikTok is all about having fun and letting loose, so put on the trendiest song and let your body do the rest!
